About the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste a YouTube link — a watch URL, a youtu.be short link, a Shorts or embed URL — or just the bare 11-character video ID, and this tool pulls the ID out with a pattern match and shows the thumbnail. It offers downloads at four fixed sizes: maxresdefault (1280×720), sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360) and mqdefault (320×180). YouTube stores every thumbnail at a predictable img.youtube.com URL, so no API key is involved. Each download is routed through this site’s own /api/yt-thumb proxy, which streams the image with a save-file header so your browser downloads it instead of just opening it in a tab.

It is quick for grabbing reference art or checking how a thumbnail looks at full size. Two honest points: not every video has a maxres or SD image — older or low-resolution uploads only have hqdefault, and the proxy quietly falls back to hqdefault when a larger size is missing — and only public videos work. Thumbnails are copyrighted by whoever uploaded them, so they are fine for preview or reference, but do not reuse someone else’s as your own.

Planning the metadata around it? The video length checker and social caption counter handle the title and caption.

Frequently asked questions

What links can I paste?

A full watch URL, a youtu.be short link, a Shorts or embed URL, or just the bare 11-character video ID. The tool extracts the ID with a pattern match and ignores the rest.

Why is the maximum-resolution download sometimes smaller than I expect?

Not every video has a maxresdefault or sddefault image — older or low-resolution uploads only have hqdefault. When a size is missing, the proxy falls back to hqdefault, which always exists.

Do you use the YouTube API or a key?

No. Thumbnails live at fixed img.youtube.com URLs, so the tool just reads those. The download is streamed through this site’s proxy only so your browser saves the file rather than opening it.

Can I download a private or unlisted video’s thumbnail?

Only public videos work. If the image is not publicly hosted at its img.youtube.com URL, the proxy cannot fetch it.

Can I reuse a thumbnail I download?

Thumbnails are copyrighted by whoever uploaded the video. They are fine for preview or reference, but do not republish someone else’s thumbnail as your own.
