About the Lorem Ipsum Generator

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin. Its source is Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, a work on ethics written in 45 BC; the placeholder is a mangled passage from it, with words cut, joined and altered until the Latin means nothing at all. Printers and typesetters have used it as dummy text since the 1500s.

The meaninglessness is the feature. Drop readable copy into an unfinished layout and everyone starts editing the words instead of looking at line length, leading, the rag and the grey texture of the page. Latin resembles English closely enough in word length and shape that a block of it has a believable texture while being impossible to actually read — which leaves you free to judge the page as a page.

The counter-argument is real. Designing on lorem ipsum hides problems, because real copy is never as tidy as the placeholder: headlines run two lines longer than the mock-up, some fields come back empty and others with three paragraphs. A layout that only holds together against evenly-sized dummy text has not been tested. Use it to rough things in, then get real content in early. This generator builds 1 to 30 paragraphs, each from a different mix of sentences and each a different length, so your blocks have the uneven edges real copy has; the first paragraph opens with the canonical “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” line, as convention expects. To measure real copy once you have it, try the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

Where does lorem ipsum come from?

It is a corrupted passage from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise written in 45 BC. The Latin has been cut and altered enough that it no longer reads as meaningful text.

Why use nonsense text instead of real words?

Because readable copy pulls attention straight to the words. Meaningless text lets you judge layout, line length and typography as a design rather than as something to proofread.

Does every paragraph look the same?

No. Each paragraph is assembled from its own random mix of three to five sentences, so paragraphs vary in length and wording. That is deliberate: identical blocks make it impossible to see how a layout copes with a ragged edge or a short last line.

Why does it always start the same way?

The first paragraph opens with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" because that is the line everyone recognises, and seeing it is how a reviewer knows at a glance that the text is placeholder rather than real copy. Every paragraph after it is mixed.

Is designing with lorem ipsum bad practice?

It draws a fair criticism: real content is never the neat length of the placeholder, so a design tested only on lorem ipsum can fall apart when the actual copy arrives. Use it early, then switch to real text as soon as you have it.

How much can I generate at once?
