About the Tip Calculator
The arithmetic is deliberately simple: the tip is your bill times the percentage you choose, the total is bill plus tip, and both are divided evenly by the number of people. It shows the tip, the grand total and the amount each person owes. Nothing is rounded — you get the exact split, and rounding up is left to you.
The percentage is the part no calculator can decide for you, because tipping is a cultural convention rather than a formula. In the United States tipping in restaurants is customary and effectively expected, and staff pay is structured around it. Across much of Europe the practice is far more modest — often rounding up or leaving small change, if anything. In Japan tipping is not customary and can be actively unwelcome. There is no universal right number, which is why this page asks you for one instead of assuming.
One genuinely expensive mistake to avoid: check whether a service charge is already on the bill. If it is, tipping on top means paying twice for the same thing. The same applies to sales tax — the calculator applies your percentage to whatever number you type, so type the subtotal you actually intend to tip on. Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
There is no universal answer, and anyone stating one as fact is guessing. It depends entirely on the country and the venue: expected in US restaurants, much more modest or just rounding up in many European countries, and not customary in Japan. Check local practice and set the percentage yourself.
The bill already has a service charge — do I still tip?
Usually not. A service charge is a tip that has already been added, so tipping again means paying for service twice. It is a common and easily avoided mistake. Read the bill before reaching for a percentage.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
That is your call and both are done in practice. The calculator has no concept of tax — it multiplies whatever figure you enter. So decide which subtotal you want to tip on and enter that number.
Does it round the per-person amount?
No. It shows the exact split to two decimals. Rounding up to a whole amount is normal when paying cash, but that is your decision, so the tool leaves the number honest.
Can it split a bill unevenly?
No — it divides the total equally by the number of people. For an uneven split, work out each person's own share of the bill and run the calculator once per person with one person in the split.
