Sleep Calculator
Enter when you need to wake up and get bedtimes timed to whole sleep cycles.
How to use the Sleep Calculator
- Enter the time you need to wake up.
- The calculator counts back in 90-minute sleep cycles.
- Pick a bedtime that lets you complete 5–6 full cycles.
Bedtime = wake time − (cycles × 90 min) − 15 min to fall asleep
About the Sleep Calculator
Sleep runs in cycles of about 90 minutes, moving from light sleep to deep sleep and dreaming. Waking at the end of a cycle — rather than in the middle of deep sleep — is why you sometimes feel great after less sleep and groggy after more.
This calculator counts backward from your wake-up time in 90-minute blocks and adds about 15 minutes to fall asleep, giving several bedtime options. Aiming for 5 or 6 complete cycles (7.5–9 hours) suits most adults.
Use it to plan an early start, recover from a late night, or build a more consistent routine. Going to bed and waking at similar times every day is one of the biggest wins for sleep quality.
Frequently asked questions
How many sleep cycles do I need?
Most adults do best with five to six cycles a night — about 7.5 to 9 hours. Consistently getting fewer than four builds a sleep debt.
Why add 15 minutes?
It takes the average person around 15 minutes to actually fall asleep after getting into bed, so the calculator builds that in.
Are all cycles exactly 90 minutes?
No — cycle length varies from roughly 80 to 110 minutes and changes through the night. 90 minutes is a reliable average for planning.
