How to use the Speed Calculator

  1. Enter the distance travelled in kilometres.
  2. Enter the time taken in hours.
  3. See the average speed in km/h, m/s and mph, plus pace per km.
Formula Speed = distance ÷ time. 1 km/h = 0.2778 m/s = 0.6214 mph

About the Speed Calculator

Average speed is simply the distance you cover divided by the time it takes. This calculator does that and instantly converts the answer into the three units people actually use — km/h, m/s and mph — plus your running pace in minutes per kilometre.

It’s handy for planning journeys (how fast must I average to arrive on time?), checking a run or cycle, or physics homework. Because it works in any consistent units, you can use it for cars, runners, cyclists or falling objects alike.

Remember this is average speed over the whole trip — real speed varies with traffic, hills and rest stops. For a required arrival time, work backward: distance divided by the hours you have gives the average speed you need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert km/h to mph?

Multiply km/h by 0.6214 (or divide by 1.609). The calculator shows both automatically so you don’t have to.

What’s the difference between speed and pace?

Speed is distance per unit time (like km/h); pace is time per unit distance (like minutes per km). Runners think in pace, drivers in speed.

Can I use any distance and time?

Yes. Enter distance in km and time in hours; use decimals for part-hours (for example, 90 minutes is 1.5 hours).
