About the Laptop & PC Test
Thirteen free tests for a laptop or desktop, grouped by what they check: input for the keyboard, mouse, click switches and typing; screen for resolution, dead pixels and refresh rate; audio and video for speakers, microphone and webcam; and other hardware for a controller, battery and what is actually inside the machine. Each one carries a line saying why it matters on a PC, so you can jump straight to the part that is playing up instead of working through the lot.
The obvious moment to run these is a used machine. Before you hand money over, five minutes with the keyboard tester and the dead pixel test finds the faults a seller will not mention. Selling one yourself, the same checks let you describe it accurately. They are just as useful for pinning down a fault you already have, confirming a repair really fixed what you paid for, or making sure your camera and microphone work five minutes before a call rather than during it.

What should I test before buying a used laptop?
Start with the keyboard and the screen, because those are the expensive things to fix and the easiest for a seller to gloss over. Run the keyboard tester for stuck or dead keys, the dead pixel test on solid colours, and the mouse or trackpad test for double-clicks. Then check the battery status, the speakers and the webcam.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Every test on this page runs inside your browser. There is nothing to download, no sign-up, and nothing you do is uploaded, which is what makes it practical to run on a machine you are about to buy from a stranger.
Can I run these on a computer I am about to sell?
Yes, and it is worth doing. Working through the list tells you exactly what is and is not working, so you can describe the machine honestly, price it properly, and avoid a dispute afterwards over a fault neither of you knew about.
Which tests need permission?
The webcam and microphone tests ask your browser for camera and mic access, because there is no other way to show you a picture or a level meter. You grant it in the browser prompt and it applies to that browser only. The rest need no permission at all.
