How to use the Speaker Test

  1. Pick a tone, then press Left to play only through the left speaker.
  2. Press Right, then Both — you should hear the side you picked each time.
  3. No sound on one side means that speaker or channel has a problem.

About the Speaker Test

This plays a clean sine tone through the left speaker, the right speaker, or both, so you can hear straight away whether a channel is silent, crackling or quieter than its partner. Nothing is downloaded — the tone is generated on the spot with the Web Audio API, so there is no file, no buffering and no waiting. You can set the frequency before you play, which is handy for checking whether a speaker struggles at the low or high end of its range.

Channel separation uses StereoPannerNode where the browser has it, and falls back to a manual channel merger on Safari, which does not. Either way, left really is only left. That matters most with headphones and earbuds, where a swapped or dead channel is easy to miss until you are on a call.

Be clear about what this is: a check of your speakers and channels, not a measurement of sound quality. It cannot tell you about frequency response, distortion or loudness, because a web page has no way to hear the room. It answers one question well — does audio come out of each side. Pair it with the microphone test before a meeting, or work through the laptop and PC tests.

How do I test left and right speakers separately?

Press the left button and listen, then stop and press right. Each button routes the tone to one channel only. If a side is silent, or both sides sound the same when you expect one, you have found either a dead speaker or crossed wiring in a headset.

Do I need to download a test tone file?

No. The tone is synthesised in your browser with Web Audio, so it starts instantly and nothing is fetched from a server. That also means you can change the frequency and hear the difference immediately.

Does this measure my speaker quality?

No, and it is worth saying so plainly. This tests channels and whether sound is produced. Measuring frequency response, distortion or loudness needs a calibrated microphone in a controlled room, not a web page. Use this to find a dead or wrong-sided speaker.

Why can I hear nothing at all?

Check your system volume and the output device your browser is using, and make sure the page is not muted in its tab. If the browser has no Web Audio support at all the tool tells you so instead of playing silently.

Which frequency should I use?

Around 440 Hz sits comfortably in the middle and almost any speaker reproduces it, so it is the best starting point for a simple works-or-not check. Lower frequencies stress small speakers and earbuds, which can expose a rattle or a driver that gives up early.
