About the Microphone Test
The microphone test combines your browser’s getUserMedia with the Web Audio API to read your live microphone input and drive a moving level meter. Click Start, allow access, then speak or tap the mic — the bar should jump in response to sound, which confirms your microphone is being picked up.
It is a fast way to settle the “can you hear me?” question before a call or a recording, or to check that a headset or a new mic is actually working. The audio is analysed live in your browser purely to move the meter and is never recorded, uploaded or stored, so nothing you say leaves your device.
If the meter stays flat, that is usually a clue rather than a broken tool: the mic may be muted, the wrong input device may be selected in your system settings, or permission may have been blocked. Like the camera test, it needs a secure (https) page and your permission. Remember it confirms that sound is reaching the browser — it is not a judge of audio quality or clarity. A flat meter usually means the microphone is muted, the wrong input device is selected in your system settings, or permission was blocked. Check those, then speak or tap the mic to see the bar respond.

Why does it ask for permission and need https?
Browsers only allow microphone access on a secure https page and after you explicitly grant permission. This protects you from sites listening without your knowledge.
Does it measure sound quality?
No. The meter confirms that your voice is reaching the browser. It does not rate clarity, background noise or recording quality.
Can I choose which microphone it uses?
The test uses your system’s current default input device. To use a different mic, change the default input in your operating system or browser settings, then start the test again.
