About the Sitemap URL Counter
The Sitemap URL Counter fetches an XML sitemap and tells you exactly how many URLs it contains — plus how many of them carry a <lastmod>, <changefreq> or <priority> value. Paste the address of your sitemap.xml and it reads the file for you and returns the count, a breakdown and a sample of the URLs.
It also understands a sitemap index — the kind of sitemap that lists other sitemaps — and counts the child sitemaps instead, so you can drill in one at a time. This is handy for checking that your sitemap has the number of pages you expect before submitting it to Google Search Console or Bing, spotting a sitemap that is suspiciously empty, and confirming which optional tags you include. Very large sitemaps are read up to a fetch limit; if a file is bigger than that, the count is shown as a minimum and you can open an individual sitemap for an exact figure. What does it count?
The number of <loc> entries in the sitemap — the URLs in a normal sitemap, or the child sitemaps in a sitemap index. It also reports how many entries include lastmod, changefreq and priority.
Does it work with a sitemap index?
Yes — and it goes further: it fetches every child sitemap in the index, counts the URLs inside each one, and shows the grand total plus a per-sitemap breakdown.
Can it handle a huge sitemap?
It reads the file up to a size limit. If your sitemap is larger, the count is shown as a minimum; open an individual sitemap for an exact number. The standard caps each sitemap at 50,000 URLs anyway.
Does it work on a gzipped sitemap?
Yes. It will decompress a .xml.gz sitemap before counting.
Is my sitemap stored or shared?
No. The tool fetches the file to count it and returns the result; it does not keep your sitemap or its URLs.
