What a 13 Digit Barcode Actually Tells You

A 13-digit barcode isn’t just a random string of numbers; it’s a tidy little map of who registered the product and whether the number itself is even correct. This piece runs through what each digit is for and how to spot a dodgy one.

What those 13 digits actually mean

Start with the first three digits. If they’re 500 to 509, the barcode belongs to a company that registered with GS1 UK. That tells you where the barcode came from, not where the fizzy drink was bottled.

After the prefix come ten more digits that the business picks—these are the product code and the variant. The last digit is the check digit, and it’s the bit that stops a till from beeping an error when you scan it.

Here’s how the check digit is worked out. Take the first twelve digits: 501234567890. Add the digits in the odd positions—1st, 3rd, 5th and so on: 5 + 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 30. Then add the even-position digits: 0 + 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 0 = 20. Multiply that even total by 3: 20 × 3 = 60. Add the two sums: 30 + 60 = 90. If the result is already a multiple of 10, the check digit is 0. So the full barcode becomes 5012345678900.

Get the check digit wrong and the scanner will reject the code outright. Shops have sent back whole pallets because the barcode on the box didn’t match the one on the invoice. The invoicing software usually catches it, but the delivery driver still ends up losing half the day while replacements are sorted.

How to check the check digit yourself

  1. Point your camera at the barcode, or drop in a photo, or paste one with Ctrl + V.
  2. The 13 digits are read and split into prefix, manufacturer, product and check digit.
  3. If the code turns out to be a different symbology, the scanner says so rather than guessing.

The problem crops up when a new product arrives at the warehouse with a barcode that looks fine but flunks the check digit. Frequently asked questions

What do the 13 digits mean?

The first three are the GS1 prefix identifying the issuing organisation, the next block is the manufacturer, then the product, and the final digit is a check digit calculated from the other twelve.

Does the prefix tell me the country of origin?

No — a common misunderstanding. It identifies the GS1 member organisation that issued the number. A company registered in one country routinely sells goods manufactured in another under the same prefix.

What is the check digit for?

It makes a misread detectable. It is derived from the preceding twelve digits with an alternating 1-3 weighting, so altering any single digit breaks the arithmetic and the scan fails rather than returning a wrong number.

Why does my photo not scan?

An EAN-13 needs the full width of the bars in frame, square-on and in focus. A photo taken at an angle, too close to one end, or with glare across the bars will not decode. Fill the frame with the barcode and shoot straight on.

Can I look up what product it is?

Not from the number alone. There is no free, complete, public database mapping every EAN to a product — the mapping lives in each retailer's own system.
