About the Final Grade Calculator
This calculator answers the exam-season question “what do I need on the final?” It rearranges the weighted-average formula to solve for the one unknown: the score needed equals your target, minus your current grade times the share of the grade that is not the final, all divided by the final’s weight. In short, it finds the points your current standing already locks in and divides the remaining gap by the slice of the grade the final controls.
The result comes with a verdict. If it is zero or below, the target is already secured — you would reach it even with a blank final. If it climbs above 100, the target is out of reach, because even a perfect paper can’t close the gap, and the tool says so rather than showing an impossible score. Anything in between is simply the mark to aim for.
Two things must hold for the answer to be right. Your “current grade” has to be your standing on everything except the final — not a figure that already folds the final in — and the weight you enter must match what the final is actually worth in the syllabus. What should I put as my current grade?

What does it mean if I need more than 100%?
The target is out of reach with this final alone: even a perfect score can’t close the gap. You would need extra credit or a lower target. The tool flags this instead of showing an impossible number.
What if it says I need zero or a negative score?
Your target is already secured. You would reach it even if you scored nothing on the final, because the grade you have banked is enough on its own.
How does it know how much the final counts?
From the weight you enter. It assumes the final is worth exactly that share of the overall grade, so if the syllabus says 30%, enter 30 and the rest of the grade is treated as the other 70%.
Can I use it to see my final grade after I take the exam?
