It survives mainly in trades that sell material off a roll or by the truckload: carpet and flooring in the US and UK were traditionally priced by the square yard, and landscaping supplies still are sold in yards. Its more important role is structural rather than commercial. The acre is defined as an exact whole number of square yards, so the entire imperial system of land measurement is built on this unit rather than on the square foot most people actually quote.
