What is a Kilometer?

A kilometer is exactly 1,000 meters — the "kilo" prefix means a thousand, as it does everywhere in the metric system. What is a Yard?

A yard is three feet, or exactly 0.9144 meters since the 1959 international agreement standardised it across the English-speaking world. Before that agreement the American and British yards differed very slightly, which mattered enough to surveyors and engineers to be worth fixing. Today the yard survives mostly in American football, in fabric and carpet sales, and in landscaping materials sold by the cubic yard, rather than in any measurement people make with a tape.
