Our free gold and silver price calculator tells you precisely what your gold or silver is worth at the live spot price, regardless of weight or unit. This guide shows how prices shift, how to check them yourself, and why it matters when you’re buying, selling or just browsing.

How the price is worked out

Gold and silver prices aren’t static—they move every minute with global markets. When you see ‘gold price per gram’, that’s the spot price, the cost to buy or sell right now. It’s usually quoted in troy ounces, but you can flip it to grams, kilos or tolas in seconds.

Say you’ve got 50 grams of 22-carat gold and spot gold is £50 per gram. Start by trimming the carat discount—22k is about 91.6% pure, so £50 × 0.916 = £45.80 per gram. Then multiply by your weight: £45.80 × 50 = £2,290. That’s the melt value—the amount a refiner would pay before any dealer’s margin or VAT is added.

Where people lose money

Buyers often overpay because they can’t tell the difference between spot price and the dealer’s selling price, which can sit 10–20% higher. Someone might think they’ve found a bargain on a 10-gram gold bar, only to find the listed price hides a £50 premium that wipes out half the spot gain. Small weights and odd units like tolas trip people up too—skip the conversion and you can lose £50 on a £300 deal without noticing.

One thing to double-check

Small differences in interest rate, term or timing can add up to large sums over the years. Before committing to any financial decision, run a few different scenarios so you can see the full picture and choose with confidence.

Quick reminders

  • Always use the live spot price, not a dealer’s quote, as your starting point.
  • Convert your weight to grams first—spot prices are quoted per gram worldwide.
  • Subtract the carat purity discount before you add any dealer’s margin.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gold price live?

Yes. It uses the current spot price of gold and silver, refreshed every few minutes from a live market feed and cached briefly so the page stays fast. The result also shows how long ago the rate was updated.

Why is this different from the price at my jeweller?

This is the spot (wholesale) metal value. A jeweller adds making charges and a retail margin, and coins or bars sell at a premium over spot, so you pay more than this to buy and receive a little less than this to sell. Use it as the baseline to judge a quote, not the final price.

What is a tola and how much is it?

The tola is the traditional gold weight of India, Pakistan and neighbouring countries. One tola is 11.6638 grams. This calculator supports it alongside grams, the troy ounce and kilograms so you can value gold the way it is actually bought locally.

What does the karat (purity) setting change?

It scales the value by how much of the metal is actually gold. 24K is pure gold, 22K is 91.7%, 18K is 75%. Two pieces of the same weight are worth different amounts if their purity differs — the rest is cheaper alloy metal.

Which currency does it show?

Any of 25, from US Dollars and Euros to the Indian Rupee, Pakistani Rupee and Gulf currencies. The spot price is quoted in USD and converted using a live exchange rate, updated daily.
