This calculator turns a step count into an estimate of the energy you burned. It first estimates your stride length from your height — roughly height × 0.415 — then multiplies your steps by that stride, by your body weight and by a fixed factor of about 0.5 to arrive at the calories. In plain terms, the more you weigh and the longer your stride, the more each step costs, which is why both height and weight feature. It also reports the distance you covered and the calories per thousand steps.
The number is handy for a rough daily sense of activity — seeing what a 10,000-step day roughly amounts to, or comparing one day against another — and for putting a walk into the same units as the food you eat.
It is an estimate built on population averages, not a measurement.
