About the Data Matrix Scanner
Data Matrix is the 2D code you find where there is almost no room for one: etched on a circuit board, laser-marked on a surgical instrument, printed on a blister pack of medicine. It packs a surprising amount into a few millimetres square, and its error correction is aggressive enough that a code can be scratched, partly obscured or marked on a curved surface and still read.
Two features explain its industrial popularity. The L-shaped finder pattern along two edges lets a scanner work out the code's orientation from any angle, so a part can be presented any way up. And the Reed-Solomon error correction can reconstruct the data with a substantial portion of the code damaged — which is what allows direct part marking, where the code is engraved into metal rather than printed on a clean label.
In pharmaceuticals you will meet it as GS1 DataMatrix, which carries a product number, a batch, an expiry date and a serial number in one small square. That combination is what makes falsified-medicine regulations enforceable: each pack is individually identifiable, not just its product line.

Usually distance. These codes are physically tiny, so unless you get close enough for the code to occupy a good share of the frame there are too few pixels per module to decode.
