About the EAN-8 Scanner

EAN-8 exists for one reason: some packaging is too small for a thirteen-digit barcode. A stick of chewing gum, a tube of lip balm, a small cosmetics carton — printing an EAN-13 at a readable size would take more space than the pack has. EAN-8 compresses the same idea into eight digits: a GS1 prefix, a short product number, and a check digit.

The trade-off is that the number carries much less information. There is no room for a full manufacturer code, so EAN-8 numbers are issued individually by the national GS1 organisation rather than allocated in blocks to a company. A business cannot mint its own EAN-8s the way it can allocate product codes within its EAN-13 range, which is why they are handed out sparingly and only where the space case is genuine.

Reading one is otherwise identical to reading an EAN-13, and this scanner treats it the same way: camera, image, or a paste with Ctrl + V, decoded on your device with nothing uploaded. Because the code is physically small, filling the frame matters more than usual — a distant photo of a tiny barcode simply does not contain enough pixels per bar to decode.

When is EAN-8 used instead of EAN-13?

Only where the packaging is genuinely too small for a thirteen-digit barcode at a readable size — small confectionery, cosmetics and similar. It is not a general-purpose alternative.

Why are EAN-8 numbers issued one at a time?

Eight digits leave no room for a full manufacturer block, so the national GS1 organisation allocates each number individually rather than giving a company a range to manage itself.

Is the check digit the same as on EAN-13?

It uses the same alternating-weight idea over fewer digits, and serves the same purpose: any single-digit misread breaks the arithmetic so the scan fails instead of returning a wrong number.

Why is it harder to scan than a bigger barcode?

Because it is physically smaller, the bars occupy fewer pixels in your photo. Move closer so the barcode fills the frame rather than zooming, and make sure it is in focus.
