About the ICO to PNG

An .ico file is a container that can hold the same icon at several sizes — 16×16, 32×32, 48×48 and often larger — which is why a favicon is an ICO. This tool opens the ICO with Imagick, finds the largest image inside it, and saves that as a PNG, so you get the best-quality version rather than a tiny 16-pixel thumbnail. Transparency is preserved, since both ICO and PNG support it.

That is useful whenever you have an icon trapped in ICO form and need it as an ordinary image: to edit it, drop it into a design, put it on a slide, or use it somewhere that expects PNG rather than the Windows icon format. Because PNG opens everywhere and edits cleanly, it is the natural format to pull an icon out into.
