About the Photo Retouch
Photo Retouch does the three things a portrait usually needs and nothing else: it softens skin, grades the colour, and blurs the background behind the subject. Everything runs on a canvas in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded — which matters more here than on most tools, because these are usually pictures of people.
Smooth skin is not a plain blur. A plain blur softens skin and destroys eyes, hair and edges along with it. This blends a softened copy back in only where the picture is already flat in colour, and leaves detail alone where it is not, so pores and blemishes fade while eyelashes and hair stay sharp. Push it too far and it will still look artificial — that is true of every beauty filter, so the Compare button is there to hold down and check against the original.
Blur background runs the same AI segmentation model as the background remover to find the subject outline, then blurs everything outside it — the phone camera portrait effect, applied to a photo you already have. The first time you use it the browser downloads a small model (about 4 MB) and caches it. It works best where there is one clear subject; very fine detail such as loose hair is the hard case for any automatic tool.
The sliders work on a scaled preview so they stay responsive, and the full-resolution render happens once, when you download. For heavier editing — crop, rotate, text, drawing — use the image editor, and to shrink the finished file use compress image.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Every effect runs on a canvas inside your browser, and the background blur model runs locally too. The photo never leaves your device, which is why this is safe for personal and client pictures.
Why does the background blur need a download the first time?
It uses a real segmentation model to find the subject, and that model is about 4 MB. Your browser caches it after the first use, so it is instant afterwards. Every other control works immediately with no download at all.
Does the smoothing ruin the detail in a face?
It is edge-aware, so it softens flat areas like skin and leaves edges — eyes, eyelashes, hair, the outline of the face — alone. At high settings any smoothing starts to look artificial, so hold the Compare button to judge it against the original before you download.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, on both iPhone and Android. The editing preview is scaled so the sliders stay responsive on a phone, and there is a fullscreen button for a larger view.
What quality is the download?
The download is rendered from the full-resolution original, not from the preview you were editing, and saved as a high-quality JPEG. The preview is only there to keep the sliders fast.
