About the PNG to WebP
This tool converts PNG images to WebP, the format built for the modern web. Imagick re-encodes each PNG as WebP at quality 82, and because WebP has its own alpha channel, a PNG's transparency is carried straight across — so logos and icons with see-through backgrounds stay transparent. The reward is size: WebP typically produces a much smaller file than PNG for the same picture, which means faster pages and less bandwidth.
WebP is supported by every current browser, so for images you serve on a website it is almost always the better choice than PNG. It shines on the kind of graphics people keep as PNG — screenshots, illustrations, UI elements — where it holds sharp edges well while cutting the file down. Photographs compress well too, though for those image to WebP (which also accepts JPG) may be more convenient.
Keep in mind WebP is a web format: some older desktop software and email clients still do not open it, so for maximum compatibility keep a PNG copy, or convert back later with WebP to PNG. To reduce a file without changing its format, use compress image. Convert up to 30 PNGs at once; several return as a ZIP. Files are uploaded, processed under random names in a folder blocked from web access, and deleted when the request ends. Up to 20 MB each, 25 MB total.
